Lectionary selections during Ordinary time for next few months examine the nature of discipleship. Certainly today’s readings address that subject, but offer lessons in style as well as content. The allusions in the gospel of Luke to the OT passages remind us that the writers of the NT framed their experience and understanding of Jesus in the language and symbols of their religious heritage. When Luke writes his narrative of Jesus, the OT prophet Elijah figures prominently.
