When I first read the gospel passage from Luke in preparation for today’s homily, I thought I would use Paul’s letter to Philemon as the basis of my sermon. My first instinct was to avoid that hard saying of Jesus bout hating the family: hate the family? How does one understand that word in the mouth of Jesus? But the more I tried mentally to duck the issue, the more I had to tackle it. So, here goes.
