Citizenship Day June 08

‘Created by One, We Welcome All’
On Friday, June 27, 2008, St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Ft. Erie was the host to the Fort Erie Multicultural Centre and hundreds of newcomers in Ft. Erie.

Fort Erie is and has been for many ears the principal land port of entry for refugees. Currently about 400 per month enter at Ft. Erie.

June 27 was Multicultural Day in Canada. As part of our outreach, the Refugee Working Group at St. Paul’s, with the enthusiastic backing of parish council, invited the Ft. Erie Multicultural Centre and other faith groups to join in a day of celebration.

The theme was “Created By One, We Welcome All”. The day began with an inter faith worship service. The service consisted of opening prayers offered by an Aboriginal leader, a lighting of candles to signify our backgrounds, and a series of readings, reflections, and hymns. Moslem, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Bahai, Anglicans and Lutherans all participated.

We adjourned for lunch “from around the world”. Immigrants and refugees from diverse countries such as Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Sudan, Iraq, Zambia, and many other countries brought their native foods in a glorious pot luck feast. We then cleared our parish centre and set up for a formal Citizenship Court when 31 permanent residents became Canadian citizens. Over 400 people participated at very stages of throughout the day.

It was a glorious way of celebrating Multicultural Day and demonstrating outreach in the name of Christ, who always welcomed the stranger.
