Hate the Family - Cost of Discipleship

Hate the Family – Cost of Discipleship

When I first read the gospel passage from Luke in preparation for today’s homily, I thought I would use Paul’s letter to Philemon as the basis of my sermon. My first instinct was to avoid that hard saying of Jesus bout hating the family: hate the family? How does one understand that word in the mouth of Jesus? The Good SamaritanThe Homily from Sunday July 14th, 2013 – Good Samaritan is now available through the Homilies link on our website.

The parable of the Good Samaritan is one of the great stories of the Bible, the essence of Jesus’ teaching, showing as it does the way of the kingdom, with its emphasis on meeting the needs of others, on our common humanity with all people that on earth do dwell. Jesus tells the story to illustrate the Great Commandment of the Law: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” “Who is my neighbour?” the legal mind asks, hoping to set a limit to God’s inclusive injunction.

Naaman dipping and cleansing himself in the River Jordan seven times

Naaman dipping and cleansing himself in the River Jordan seven times

The Old Testament story this morning is linked to the gospel reading by the act of cleansing: 2 Kings records the story of the “cleansing” of Naaman, a Syrian commander, as he travels to Israel seeking a cure for his leprosy; in the gospel story a leper is cured, with rather serious consequences for the healer, Jesus.
